No Sugar Challange!

Ok, I know, this may seem a little crazy, especially in December, but then I kind of am a little crazy. I have joined in the no sugar challenge put up by John over at his blog. The goal is to cut out any added and refined sugar for 30 days. Now, normally I am not one for cutting things out of my food choices, to many years of yo-yo dieting that didn’t do anything has really wised me up to the stupidity of depriving yourself. But this is something I can get behind because it will help further my goal to nix the Star-ucks scones from my breakfasts and keep the sugar buffet that is the holiday season out of my line of site.

How many of us have succumbed to the treats brought into work, not because they are really any good but because they are there and been disappointed with it’s store bought flavor? This year, no bland sugar cookies, no stale candy canes, and no cheap milk chocolate. It is not worth it, my taste buds deserve better. Instead let me interest you in a ripe persimmon, they are in season right now, or how about a wonderfully tart bunch of pomegranate seeds? We need sugar to live, glucose it what fuels our muscles, but we need quality not just quantity and for me that is what this month is going to be about, getting those natural soruces, you know fruit, back to the top of the snack list and the cookies off.

So I encourage you to join us, maybe even if you just commit to only indulging in the treats that are really worth it, like so and so’s amazing holiday bread but not bothering with the sugar cookies and leaving the sweetener out of your tea so you really taste the tea and not just sugar. I leave the call to cut out bread or not to you, I am going with whole grain and gluten-free alternatives for the variety it will add to my diet (that and I just bought gluten-free toaster waffles).

Ok, ready, set….go!

  • Yeah!! I’m so excited for you to try the 30 days without sugar. You can do it! You might even want to go longer than 30 days.

If you need any encouragement, natural sugar substitutes, or similar stories, come on over to see me. I gave up sugar for my 2008 New Year’s Resolution and am going strong!

  • I gave up processed sugar, for the most part, 2 years ago. Almost all of my food cravings went away and now when I do eat processed sugar, I generally get a headache. Hang in there!
